Top 10 Movies I Want To See in Blu-ray: Part II
Yesterday, I posted the first 4 movies in my Blu-ray release wishlist. Here are the next 3.
6. Band of Brothers
This was my favourite TV series on DVD. I’ve lost count the amount of times I have watched the entire set. I am never bored of it, so it was no struggle to put this in my Top 10 wants on BD.
I loved the way this was filmed using hi-def cameras. The washed out colours and visible grain always looked great on the RPTV, so I truly believe this series will look awesome in HD. Never has grain looked so good. The gritty realism will look fantastic on BD. I found this series far superior to the brilliant Saving Private Ryan, and always left me with a heavy heart and deep feeling of gratitude for all they went through to protect us from tyranny.
I was always in awe of the audio on the SD set. The dts surround sound was enveloping, so I am looking forward to hearing this on BD. What will be the audio mix? I’m hoping for dts HDMA 7.1, or at least DTHD/PCM 7.1. Either way, I’m sure we won’t be disappointed by the audio from this BD. Let’s hope all the extras are ported over from the existing DVD set (HD please).
UPDATE: HBO has recently announced that this set is being prepped for release later this year. Great news!
5. Blade Trilogy
This is one for all us hardcore action junkies - the story of a fight between a half-man, half-vampire and hordes of nasty vampires (suck heads). There’s loads of blood and guts, which will look bloody good on Blu-ray.
Being New Line movies, we know they can handle all those dark corners with aplomb, along with all that fast-moving action. Here’s hoping New Line will use a hi bitrate for these movies, now that HD-DVD is no more.
Being a New Line Platinum Series DVD, they boasted great sound. Let’s hope their move to BD solidifies this. Nothing less than dts HDMA 7.1 will do, so we can realy sink our teeth into all that blood-curdling screeching, screaming, and revving of muscle car engines.
As stated previous, these are New Line movies, so let’s hope for loads of added features – in hi-def please! I can almost smell that ash.
4. The Matrix Box Set
When The Matrix first hit the screens almost 10 years ago, it became THE biggest headfuck movie of all time, a modern sci-fi classic, using state-of-the-art technology that introduced the world to ‘bullet time’. Two sequels followed, and although clearly not in the same league as the mindblowing original, they were nonetheless superb movies.
Later this year, Warner is releasing these movies on Blu-ray, and all I can say is it’s about bloody time, too. Blu-ray was MADE for these movies. The green neons and the darkened tunnels will all look great in hi-def. My advice: movies as monumental as these deserve proper HD audio, so here’s hoping for the same Dolby Tru-HD that graced the HD-DVD version that has been available for almost a year now.
When this collection of movies was released as a box set on DVD, it contained 10 discs with over 35 hours of documentaries, music videos, and the like. Let’s hope ALL these added materials make their way to BD.
All these features were available on the Ultimate Matrix Collection that appeared in HD-DVD. Unfortunately, all the bonus goodies were on SD DVD and in standard def only – what a waste. Worse of all, the monumental animatrix was relegated as an extra and was shown in SD only – a crime in itself.
One thing the HD-DVD did have was interactive material, which included Picture in Picture material. This is the reason why this collection was not previously available on BD. Warner Brothers were waiting for Profile 1.1 (BDJ) to be made available. This will be one of the most eagerly awaited titles yet to appear on Blu-ray. Forget the red, take the Blu!
