PlayStation 3: Love it or hate it?

Many so-called hi-browed people claim that the PS3 is not a real Blu-Ray player - nothing more than a games machine for zit-faced adolescents and geeks that still live with their parents, using such insults as ‘kiddies’ toy’ or ‘George Foreman Grill’ (because of the shape). Owners, however, love its versatility and its upgradability. No other BD player loads up so fast. This is because of the core engine. I am now going to go into more detail about the amazing upgradability of this machine in this 3-part blog.

Profile v1.1

Last December, Sony made firmware version 2.01 available to PS3 owners. This made the player Profile version 1.1 compliant. This is also known as Blu-ray Disc Java (BDJ). This is an interactive feature similar to what is now the defunct HD-DVD’s Hdi. Blu-Ray called it the In Movie Experience or IME. The first BD to appear with IME was that of Terminator 3: Rise Of The Machines, quickly followed by Sunshine, Resident Evil Extinction, War, and Saw IV. With IME, you can watch Picture In Picture (P.I.P.) commentaries, visual effects P.I.P., and interactive games.

To be Profile v1.1 compliant, the player must have 256 KB of persistent memory. Luckily, the PlayStation 3 has between 20 to 80 GB of persistent memory (when formatted). Being profile v1.1 compliant is a great reason to buy the Play Station 3.
