Reasons To Be Cheerful for PS3 Owners: Part II
Yesterday, I posted about the PS3’s Profile v1.1 compliance. Here’s another reason why the PS3 is not just a games console, but a top-notch Blu-ray player.
Profile v2.0
Three weeks ago, Sony gave us firmware update version 2.20. This gave the PlayStation 3 the ability to access Profile v2.0 features that have just started to appear on certain Blu-ray discs such as Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story and The 6th Day.
Profile v2.0, also known as Blu-ray Disc Live (BD-Live), allows viewers to access added movie specific extras not found on the original disc such as additional trailers or behind-the-scenes material, the ability to purchase movie-related merchandise, download movie ringtones to your mobile phone, or to play movie-related games online with anyone around the world, all whilst watching the movie. Groovy, ‘ey?
For a player to be v2.0 compliant, the player must have an ethernet port and at least 1 GB of persistent memory. Luckily again, the PlayStation 3 has an ethernet port and between 20 to 80 GB of persistent memory (actually, it’s a fully loaded computer with Wi-Fi). Profile v2.0 is going to take off in a major way, and more movies will be made available shortly. The hit sci-fi action comedy Men In Black (MIB) has just been announced as coming in June 17th and will be a v2.0 BD. Yet another reason to own a PS3.
