Different studios have different merits. This is especially true in the Blu-rays they produce. In this post, I outlined the good points of certain studios. You can use this as a guide when purchasing Blu-ray movies, so you’ll always know what to expect from those Blu-ray discs.
Sony
- Use of HD audio (PCM/DTHD/dts HDMA)
- Large and growing catalogue of both old and new titles
20th Century Fox
- Superior visuals
- Use of HD audio (dts HDMA)
- Promise of more back catalogue titles in the near future
Warner Brothers
- Very good range of both old and new catalogue titles, plus many more on the way
- Very good picture quality
- Many older titles have kept their original extras, though mostly not in hi-def
Disney
- Picture quality has been stunning using the superios AVC encode, especially Pirates of the Caribbean and the Pixas animations.
- Full use of PCM soundtracks
- Good range of extra materials
- Many great titles coming shortly
Lions Gate
- Use of HD audio (PCM and dts HDMA), often in their 6.1 and 7.1 forms
- Good range of extras on disc, often in full HD
- Ever growing catalogue of titles
- Most recent titles have profile V.2.0
New Line Home Cinema
- Excellent picture quality
- Excellent audio with full use of 7.1 dts HDMA
- Large catalogue of popular titles waiting to be released soon, hopefully fully loaded with extra material in HD
Paramount/Dreamworks
- Good picture quality
- Special features ported over from DVD, though only in SD
- Good selection of popular titles that should be available soon
Universal
- Too soon to say, but have a very large catalogue of titles.
Tomorrow, I’ll be outlining the bad points for each studio. Stay tuned for that.
